Quarantine. Social distancing. Self-isolating. School's out.
Raise your hand if you've heard any (or all) of those words today? 🙋
Now, here's the deal: school being out is fun for a while, but (I hate to be the Debbie Downer here) YOUR EDUCATION MATTERS, KIDS.
I graduated during the "great" recession (back in 2008). Almost everyone had a hard time finding jobs at the time, so it didn't seem strange that our starting salaries were so low, but it took YEARS to climb out of that pit. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ You might think it's not a big deal to have a prolonged, coronavirus-induced spring break. Countless schools have already added an additional week, and let's be honest: that could easily stretch into a month or more.
But guess what? This isn't going to happen every year. And if you can help it, you don't want to be that "out of place" generation like we were, disadvantaged because of circumstances beyond your control.
None of us can solve this issue single-handedly. The most important thing we can do is halt the spread of COVID-19 while we still can. But the next most important thing?
Do something for your brain every. single. day.
It doesn't have to be hard! Starting tomorrow, I'm going to roll out a fun vocabulary-boosting game that we can play together, online, for free.
Countless other educators are also putting together great online learning resources. Check out @KhanAcademy and anyone else you know and trust. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If I were in your shoes, I'd use this time to eat healthy, work out, and read, read, read!
Because "social distancing" is really just code for "I've got all the time in the world for a good book. I'll see you when I see you."⠀
Prolonged - Lengthy; continuing longer than usual
Induced - Brought on by/because of⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
